Helping Hospitals prevent and reduce Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) by implementing a Pressurized Spaces Program using ASHRAE 170 with Dino Coliano, Head of Healthcare, Siemens Smart Infrastructure

    Date: March 30, 2021 from 12 PM - 1 PM

Description: To support the infection control and clinical care teams as well as satisfy accreditation compliance requirements, the facilities staff in a hospital operates and maintains a variety of critical and pressurized spaces. Each space is designed to support and enhance the clinical care process and ultimately promote patient healing. Unfortunately, the built environment, including pressurized spaces, may be having a negative impact on clinical care and patient outcomes due to improper pressure relationships and infrequent inspection, testing, and maintenance activities on the respective equipment and end devices in these critical spaces. Negatively pressurized spaces include Infectious Isolation Rooms while positively pressurized spaces include Operating Rooms, Pharmacies, and Soiled Linen Closets. National standards, including ASHRAE 170, and state standards may apply. In addition, there may be standards or guidelines issued by professional organizations that provide requirements for spaces in order to minimize infections. A hospital staff should create an accurate inventory of their spaces and identify the respective compliance standards that apply. Finally, the staff should be implementing a sustainable program to train their staff, monitor the equipment and key room environmental parameters, and, ultimately maintain performance of the equipment and end devices as designed for these spaces.

    Course Length: 60 minutes – 45 Minutes Presentation + 15 Minutes – Questions/Answers

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Review the various standard requirements for pressurized spaces for hospital facilities engineers.

    2. Specify systems and equipment that support a monitoring plan for pressurized spaces.

    3. Educate the hospital staff on how to create a pressurized spaces program.

    4. Identify the available resources for hospital facilities engineers to develop a pressurized spaces program.
